Madeira Rum is a product with Geographical Indication (GI) produced in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, as confirmed and characterized by Legislative Decree nº 18/2021/M, of July 28th.
A Geographical Indication (GI) is a geographical name or equivalent that designates and identifies a product originating from that place or region, with a certain quality, reputation or other characteristics that can be attributed to its geographical origin.
Madeira Rum is the only agricultural rum produced in Portugal.
Geographical area
The Autonomous Region of Madeira is in the Atlantic Ocean, between 30° and 33° north latitude, 978 km southwest of Lisbon and about 700 kilometres from the coast of Africa.
It comprises of two inhabited islands, the Madeira (740,7 km²) and Porto Santo (42,5 km²) islands and by several uninhabited small islands (Desertas and Selvagens Islands).
The geographical area for the production of ‘Rum da Madeira’ covers the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo.
